Secret Cinema may have put Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in the top 10 film chart after 35 years, but I hope that isn’t from people buying the film rather than going to the Secret Cinema screening, because it is a truly epic, amazing, incredible experience. If you are a Star Wars fan then you have to go and see it with this experience. It is like a theme park, theatre and cinema experience all rolled into one.
Not only do you feel you are part of the film, you feel like you are there, not on a studio set, but on another planet. I don’t want to, nor can I give away too much. But, when it starts you feel like you are part of the production with the rebels. Then once you are transported from earth, you are left to explore for yourselves, but watch out as there are Stormtroopers and Bounty Hunters wandering around and don’t trust those Jawas, I saw someone interrogated by a Stormtrooper after a Jawa tried to get her in trouble for something she hadn’t done. Whilst you are around exploring, eating food and drinking at the Cantina bar, the actors playing the lead cast members are acting out Star Wars: A New Hope in front of you.
There is so much going on before you even get to the film, and everyone was revved up for the movie. But again, you aren’t just left to enjoy the movie. It is brought to life with the actors and lighting which truly makes watching the film an incredible experience.
This production is Secret Cinema’s largest to-date. Now I haven’t been to any of the others, I missed out on Back to the Future, which I hear was epic. I had always thought that the tickets were rather overpriced, but from attending the latest production I can tell you that it is worth every penny.
The secret location has been transformed into the largest art and performance centre of its kind in London, layered acrossan area spanning nearly twice the size of the Tate Modern or the location for last year’s Secret Cinema production of Back to the Future.
Over 400 actors, DJs and bands will perform across 4 music stages over the course of the show run. Secret Artists so far included Goldie, Simian Mobile Disco, Jamie Jones, Posthuman and DJ Food with many more secret acts booked. After the film, I was lucky enough to party to the DJ set of Groove Armada, an incredible way to end the evening.
SECRET CINEMA Presents STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK runs now until 27th September 2015www.secretcinema.org/tickets It runs from a Tuesday – Sunday and you need to arrive between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. I really recommend getting there as early as possible to enjoy every moment, and go at the weekend so you can party the rest of the night with the secret DJs.
