Film preview: Jupiter Ascending

With summer blockbuster season fast approaching, we take a closer look at the highly anticipated sci-fi flick, Jupiter Ascending. While summer 2014 promises cinemagoers the usual array of reboots and sequels, from Transformers: Age of Extinction to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jupiter Ascending bucks the trend, and is one of the few original stories on the roster for this year.

However, you can check out what all the fuss is about for yourself, when the film hits Cineworld cinemas in July 2014. Jupiter Ascending is the latest offering from Andy and Lana Wachowski, which die hard sci-fi fans will know as the directorial duo behind the Matrix trilogy. While their follow up efforts, namely Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas, failed to match the commercial success of the Matrix films, Jupiter Ascending appears to be a return to form for the pair and also marks their first foray into the world of 3D film.

All star cast

With an all star cast including Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings) and Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables), early trailers reveal that the film will be a spectacle of epic proportions and, as is typical of the Wachowskis filmmaking style, will feature some world class special effects.

The film tells the story of a young impoverished woman, Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who discovers she is destined for cosmic greatness. While working as cleaner and experiencing a seemingly endless stream of bad breaks, Jones is tracked down by Caine (portrayed by a pointy-eared Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, who informs her of her fate and her universal importance. Although Caine is originally sent to hunt Jupiter down, in a somewhat Snow White-esque turn of events, he quickly becomes her protector.

Queen of the Universe

Jupiter soon learns that her genetic code marks her as galactic royalty and discovers that she is next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. However, Jupiter’s royal DNA poses a threat to the current Queen of the Universe, and so the tyrant King, Balem (played by a terrifying Eddie Redmayne), sets out to have her killed. Together with the help of Caine she must fight for Earth and her position in the galaxy.

‘Science fiction space opera’

Fans of science-fiction will notice that the film bears resemblance to other fantasy and sci-fi thrillers such as Avatar, Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, juxtaposing earthly elements with over the top space age and fantasy scenes. It appears that the ambitious offering, which has been described by the film’s director Lana Wachowski as a ‘science-fiction space opera’, will no doubt be the must-see summer blockbuster amongst sci-fi and fantasy fans this year.

As Wachowski went on to reveal, ‘”It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It’s got a lot of original action and it’s got a lot of romance.” The film will be available in 2D, 3D and IMAX and is set to hit Cineworld cinemas from the 25th of July.
