Apparently over 100 people have picked up their phones to complain about the shocking rape scene that featured in this weekend’s episode. A lot of fans have also said they plan to boycott the show in disgust. I don’t know what all of the fuss is about. The show is a drama, representing life in a house with rich people and their servants. It is a very shocking thing that they showed, but it is only highlighting shocking scenes that probably happened to women on those situations.
Everyday soap operas like Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street show extreme storylines, far worse than this and highly exaggerated (serial killers and whatnot). People seem to forget that Downton Abbey is set in a very different time to what we are in now, where women, especially working-class women, had it tougher than those do today. What is more shocking about the episode is how she had to deal with it. She couldn’t tell her husband as she knew how he would react and his criminal record past could lead to him getting the death penalty. She sadly just has to deal with it from the help of her boss.
It will be interesting to see how the show progresses with this. I think they have done a good job so far, and it certainly didn’t warrant those complaints.
