This week I watched The Lifeguard, a beautiful drama that centres around a reporter played by Kristen Bell who is unhappy with her city life and affair with her boss. She packs a bag and her cat and head home and takes up her teen job as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool. She starts a dangerous relationship with a troubled teenager, putting her friendship on the line with her best friend who happens to be the assistant vice principle at the high school her lover attends.
The film is about knowing who you are, and for Bell’s character that involves going back to where she last remembered being happy to find herself again.
I’ve only really seen Kristen in comedies (she was great in Forgetting Sarah Marshall) so it was really nice to see her playing this vunerable character. The film also stars Mamie Gummer, Meryl Streep’s daughter of Emily Owens M.D. (still gutted that show got cancelled).
If you are looking for something moving to watch I highly recommend this. If you loved Garden State then you’ll enjoy this film.
