What happens when Joss Whedon takes a break from blockbuster super heroes and steps back to his lower budget material? You get a great cast, a raw black and white film and Shakespeare! Whedon decided to keep himself routed by making a modern adaptation on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, at his home over 12 days.
If you are a fan of his work and the cast of his hit shows such as Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse, then you will love this film. A great line up including Alexis Denisof (Angel), Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse), Clark Gregg (Avengers), Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Reed Diamond (Dollhouse), Sean Maher (Firefly) and Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) are just a few names in this cast. Alexis brings some great comedy to this film as Benedict and Nathan Fillion just plays his role for jokes wearing an oversized suit and some random padding to fill himself out a bit.
The fact that the film is black and white blends the modern day setting and the classic script perfectly. The film is simple and just focuses on the story and the characters.
Well done Joss. But I am also looking forward to you heading back to your super heroes to bring us Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Avengers 2.
Much Ado About Nothing is in selected cinemas in the UK. I saw it at the Prince Charles Cinema in London.
