Les Misérables review

Well, Les Misérables is absolutely unbelievable. Tom Hopper has done it again and produced some award worthy acting from his cast. Hugh Jackman is amazing and Anne Hathaway, who lost weight and cut off her hair for the role, gives one of the most moving performances I’ve ever seen. During her performance of I Dreamed a Dream the camera stays constantly completely on her for the entire song, it is an incredible performance, she keeps you glued to the screen. But she isn’t the only one with a long-hold camera shot song. Eddie Redmayne also performs a solo with emotion.

It is a brave thing to take one of the longest running shows and turn it into a film sensation, perhaps why it has taken 27 years for this musical version to appear (the 1998 Liam Neeson version was based on the book rather than the musical).

I found myself crying several times during this film, the sort of tears that you don’t notice building, but when they are rolling down your face.

I’m slowly working my way through the award nominated films, but from what I’ve seen so far, this is has to be the winner for best actor (Hugh Jackman) and supporting actress (Anne Hathaway).
