This is a bit of a late one as I went to see the show a few weeks ago, but thought I’d write this up for all those who are thinking of going to see Rock of Ages. I was kindly invited to one of the preview shows a few weeks ago and of course jumped at the chance to attend. Rock of Ages is brilliantly funny, not something that I was actually expecting, the songs are worked into the play quite well (not like the dissaster Desperately Seeking Susan or We Will Rock You – sorry the only thing I enjoyed in the latter was the music).
The show stars Shayne Ward and Justin Lee Collins, but don’t get your hopes up that they are the actual leads, Shayne’s part is quite small, but when he graces the stage he certainly makes his presence known. Justin Lee Collins is as funny as always, but I think he is upstaged by the narrator played by Simon Lipkin, who many will know from Avenue Q and the brilliant song that is “The Internet is for Porn”.
And even better, this Broadway show is being made into a film starring Tom Cruise (playing Stacee Jaxx – Shayne’s character), Russell Brand (Lonnie the narrator – Simon’s character) and Alec Baldwin (Dennis Dupree – Justin’s role).
Over all, it’s packed full of laughs and some great songs from the 80s, so what are you waiting for? Book your tickets now! Rock of Ages is at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
